A Special Day on the Beach: Welcoming the RNLI...

There are some moments here at The Osea View Café that remind us exactly why this place is so special and Sunday 19th April was one of them.

Against the backdrop of the Blackwater Estuary, we watched as a lifeboat approached the shore. On board were members of the RNLI crew from West Mersea Lifeboat Station, arriving in the most fitting way possible to collect a cheque raised by our community.

Seeing them land directly on the beach beside the café was a powerful and emotional moment. It brought home just how vital their work is and how closely connected we all are to the sea.

A Community Effort

The funds were raised through our Lobster Pot Christmas Tree last December – a project that meant a great deal to all of us.

Designed and built by Janie Robinson, owner of Osea Leisure and The Osea View Café and her team, the tree quickly became a talking point throughout the festive season. Built from real lobster pots and decorated with buoys, rope and coastal finds, it also incorporated materials rescued from the sea from weathered oars to fragments of fishing equipment.

It wasn’t just a Christmas decoration. It was a reflection of this coastline, shaped by the sea and the people who live and work alongside it.

Local businesses sponsored individual lobster pots and visitors donated generously over the festive period. Together, it became something much bigger than we imagined – a true community effort in support of the RNLI.

As Janie says: “Designing the tree was a real labour of love. I wanted it to feel completely rooted in our coastline using materials shaped by the sea and giving them a second life. Supporting the RNLI, and everything they do for our community, made it even more meaningful.”

A Moment to Remember

Yesterday’s gathering brought together Alice Flores, Head of Marketing & Communications for Osea Leisure, Wilf Robinson, Director of Osea Leisure, Sue Woods, Chairman of the Maldon & District RNLI Branch, and of course, the brilliant crew from West Mersea.

It was a simple, informal hour but one filled with gratitude, warmth and a shared appreciation for the RNLI and the work they do every day, often in the most challenging conditions.

Janie couldn’t actually be at the presentation on the day as she was on the river racing underlying the importance of the RNLI to the River Blackwater community.

Alice Flores said: “It was such a special moment to see the RNLI arrive by sea – a powerful reminder of the work they do every day. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported the fundraising effort.”

Martin Wade, West Mersea Lifeboat Chair, said “I was very pleased to attend the cheque presentation at The Osea View Café with our lifeboat crew during their regular Sunday training exercise.  This sponsored fundraising initiative is hoped to be repeated next Christmas. Such generous support is invaluable to our volunteers and ensures that they can continue to save lives at sea.  We extend warm thanks to everyone involved, yesterday was a special occasion.”

Thank You

To everyone who sponsored a lobster pot, made a donation, or simply came along and supported the tree – thank you.

And to the RNLI crew, for everything you do to keep our coastline safe – we are incredibly grateful.
